Ecuador is a small country located in South America, where popular arts have always been a vigorous presence. The inspiration of Ecuadorian artist is the heritage of their ancestors, such as Incas, whose works constitute the oldest expression of craftsmanship.

The deep and green jungle has been the inspiration for the craftsmen of the Oriental Region to produce all kind of birds, hangers, earings, and other crafts carved in a special kind of wood called "balsa". They make a great variety of birds such as parrots, toucans, etc., painted in attractive colors. This is an amazing process because artists use only simple knives and hot irons as tools to obtain these wonderful masterpieces. This new craft began just a decade ago. |

The production of straw goods, for example the toquilla hat, straw fruit, Chordeleg place mats, napking rings and others, is associated not only with small groups specialized craftsmen who carry out their work in their workshops but also with the majority of peasants from the Azuay province and a large number of people from Cañar and Manabi. |

These baubles, bells, wreathes, bows, Father Christmas and hangling mobiles for the cradle or the wall are made with woven toquilla straw using traditional techniques and anilina dyes. |

The Salasaca region is located about 14 Kms east of Ambato. From their very origins the Salasacas have been considered skilled craftsmen. Their traditional craft activity has been wool weaving; children collaborate by watching the flocks and the main bulk of work is done by the women who concentrate on thread spinning and weaving. |
Otavalo in Imbabura Province is an area devoted to textiles weaving. Beatiful woven goods are made by indian groups, each of these communities is specialized in a type of textile; that is, bed clothes are woven in Quinchuquí, scrafts are made in La Bolsa, ponchos are woven in Iluman, tapestry making is the Peguche's activity, girdles are the specialty of La Compañía, linen cloths are from Agato, wool is spun and sweaters are knitted in Carabuena, and so on.
